The snowbird drive has a rhythm to it. You leave the cold behind somewhere around dawn, settle into the I-95 corridor, and watch the latitude tick south through Virginia and the Carolinas. By the time Florence, South Carolina, comes up on the signs, you have driven far enough to want a real night's sleep and not so far that the destination feels close. This is, by most reckonings, the natural midpoint of the run between the Northeast and Florida. It is also where most travelers settle for whatever chain sits closest to the off-ramp.
There is a better option, and it asks very little of you. Hartsville sits about 24 miles northwest of the interstate at Florence, roughly a thirty-minute drive on US-52 and SC-151, with the nearest access at Exit 164. Hartsville is one of the smallest American cities to headquarter a Fortune 500 company, which tells you something about a town that looks this unhurried. The name Mantissa is a math joke (the meaningful decimals of a logarithm), a nod to the Governor's School down the street. It suits a stop that is more than a number on the odometer.
