This isn’t another branded hotel ringed by chain restaurants and parking lots. Step outside and you’re on a walkable, friendly Main Street: boutique shops, locally owned restaurants, and a rooftop bar, all within a few blocks. It’s an authentic Southern small town — twice named an All-America City.
In 2014, five local businessmen bought the underused Kimbrell’s furniture building on their own main street — not outside money, but neighbors with a vision of a boutique hotel and rooftop bar that would help carry their downtown’s transformation. It has been locally owned and operated ever since: the investors are from Hartsville, the crew is from Hartsville, and from countertops to caterers the hotel leans on local businesses wherever it can. Seventeen suites. One rooftop. A century-old downtown building given a new life. (The name has a story of its own, too — worth two minutes.)
An early-twentieth-century commercial building. A Belk department store and then a Kimbrell's furniture store through the long middle of the century. The Mantissa since 2015. The same location in the center of East Carolina Avenue became three different things across a hundred years.
The 2014–2015 adaptive reuse, led by local Hartsville partners, won the 2016 Gaines Jontz Rehabilitation Award from Main Street South Carolina.
