An antique logarithm table with a brass decimal point
The name

The meaningful decimal.

Why a hotel is named for a piece of mathematics.

A logarithm has two parts. The whole number to the left of the decimal, the characteristic, tells you the order of magnitude. Everything to the right of the decimal, the mantissa, carries the precision. It is the part that does the real work; the small, exact figure that completes the calculation.

We took the name for two reasons. The first is literal: Hartsville is a town of mathematicians. The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, the residential public school for the state's most gifted students, sits a short walk from our front door. The second is a matter of taste. The best parts of a stay are rarely the big ones. They are the small, considered details: the bed that's actually comfortable, the kitchen you didn't expect, the sunset you caught from the roof. The mantissa.

Seventeen suites. One rooftop. A century-old building given a new life on a single corner of East Carolina Avenue. The details to the right of the decimal.
