The Mantissa is about 12 miles from Darlington Raceway: the boutique, all-suite alternative to the interstate chains for the Southern 500 and spring race weekend.
The Mantissa Hotel sits roughly 20 minutes from the Darlington Raceway gates, in the walkable historic downtown of Hartsville. For race weekend that means the same easy drive to the track as the Florence hotels. But instead of a highway exit, you come home to a century-old building with seventeen individually furnished suites, a rooftop bar, and a steakhouse next door.
Darlington is "The Track Too Tough to Tame," and its two NASCAR Cup weekends, the Southern 500 over Labor Day and the spring race, fill every room for forty miles. The chains on I-20 and I-95 book out and surge their rates. The Mantissa has only 17 suites, so it goes early too. But it stays a hotel with a sense of place rather than a parking lot with a bed.
Dinner at Sam Kendall's steakhouse, in our breezeway. A nightcap upstairs at The Rooftop. Breakfast at The Rooster 136, a few doors down. Craft beer at Wild Heart Brewing Company. It's the part of race weekend the highway can't give you: all of it on foot from your suite.

Yes. It's the area's only upscale, all-suite boutique hotel, and a quieter, more characterful alternative to the interstate chains. With just 17 suites it books out early for both the Southern 500 and the spring Cup race, so reserve well ahead.
Same short drive to the track, but a walkable historic downtown instead of a highway strip: dinner at Sam Kendall's, the rooftop bar, and morning coffee all on foot.
