From New York, the route to Florida is almost a single line on the map: I-95 South down the Jersey Turnpike, around Baltimore and Washington, through Richmond, across the Carolinas. It is roughly 10.5 to 11 hours of driving just to reach Florence, South Carolina, and several more hours of Florida ahead after that. Somewhere in the middle, usually after dark, the gas-station coffee stops tasting like anything and the chain hotels at the interchange begin to blur together.
Florence is the natural pause. It is the place where the Northeast hands the wheel to the South, and where most drivers from New York start looking for a bed. The Mantissa is not at the interchange. It sits in Hartsville, about 24 miles northwest of I-95, a thirty-minute drive up US-52 and SC-151, with the nearest access at Exit 164. That short detour is the whole point. It trades a parking lot off the ramp for a century-old downtown corner, and it costs you almost nothing in time you will notice on a two-day drive.
The Mantissa holds seventeen suites in an early-twentieth-century building downtown. They were built to feel like apartments rather than hotel rooms: full kitchens, premium beds, marble baths, walk-in closets. After a day behind the wheel, the difference registers immediately. You unpack into a space that does not echo, and you sleep on a bed you can dial in.
Dinner is upstairs. The Rooftop at the Mantissa has poured sunset cocktails since 2015, with charcuterie and a long view over the rooftops of Hartsville. Continental breakfast is included in the morning, and the front desk is staffed around the clock. By the time you have had coffee, you are back on US-52 toward Exit 164, on I-95 South again before the day has fully warmed.
You do not need a plan. Sam Kendall's, the restaurant next door, opened in 2017 and handles the proper sit-down dinner if the charcuterie upstairs is not enough. Downtown carries roughly 97 percent occupancy, which for a town this size means lit storefronts and people on the sidewalks. The Rooster 136, Wild Heart Brewing Company, and Black Creek Bistro are all within an easy walk.
If you arrive with daylight to spare, Kalmia Gardens is a 35-acre botanical garden a few minutes from downtown. Hartsville earned a state Cultural District designation in 2023 (locals write it "hARTSville"), and it is the unlikely home of Coker University, the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, and a Fortune 500 headquarters in Sonoco. The hotel's name, fittingly, is the math term for the meaningful part of a logarithm. It is a town that rewards a little curiosity.
