A half-hour off the interstate at Florence, a century-old downtown and seventeen suites worth the small detour.
Somewhere south of Richmond the I-95 corridor stops offering and starts repeating. The same blue logo signs, the same off-ramp clusters of motels and drive-throughs, the same flat fluorescent rooms that could be in any state and are in none of them. By the time you reach South Carolina you have a decision to make. You can pull off at Florence or push on to Santee and take whatever the interchange gives you, or you can do something slightly different and considerably better.
Hartsville sits about 24 miles northwest of I-95 at Florence, a thirty-minute drive on US-52 and SC-151. It is not on the interstate. We will not pretend it is. What it is, is a short and easy detour off Exit 164 or Exit 160A into an actual downtown, the kind with a rooftop, a brewery, a restaurant next door and a corner building from the early twentieth century that has been turned into a seventeen-suite hotel. The extra half-hour buys you an evening instead of a layover. That is the whole argument, and it is a good one.
The Mantissa was built into a downtown building with a hundred-year past, and the suites are designed to feel less like a hotel room than like a small apartment you have always meant to rent. Full kitchens. Premium beds. Marble baths and walk-in closets. After a day of mile markers, a suite that does not look like a suite is its own kind of rest.
Dinner happens upstairs. The Rooftop at the Mantissa has poured sunset cocktails since 2015, with charcuterie and a long view over the Pee Dee. Sam Kendall's, the restaurant next door, handles the proper sit-down meal. In the morning there is continental breakfast and complimentary YMCA access if you want to shake the drive out of your legs, then a clear half-hour back to I-95 and Florida ahead of you.
Hartsville rewards the curious. It is a 2023 South Carolina Cultural District, a downtown running near 97 percent occupancy, one of the smallest American cities to headquarter a Fortune 500 company in Sonoco. Coker University anchors one end of it. The Governor's School for Science and Mathematics anchors the math-minded reputation that gave the hotel its name, the mantissa being the meaningful decimal part of a logarithm.
For one evening, the menu is simple. Cocktails on the roof, dinner at Sam Kendall's, a nightcap at Wild Heart Brewing Company or a coffee the next morning at The Rooster 136. If you have a slow start in you, Kalmia Gardens spreads thirty-five botanical acres a few minutes from downtown, and Lee State Park sits back toward the interstate. None of it is on the way to anywhere. That is rather the point.
The most rewarding overnight stop on I-95 in South Carolina is Hartsville, a downtown about 30 minutes west of the interstate at Florence. It is close to the natural midpoint. Hartsville is about 7 to 7.5 hours from Washington, DC, around 9.5 to 11 hours from Philadelphia and New York, and roughly 5.5 to 8 hours onward to Jacksonville or Orlando, which makes it a sensible place to break a two-day I-95 run.
